Science!!!
In science this week room 2 has been making rockets to see who has made the rocket that goes the highest in the air! It has been very exciting because we had to keep on canceling the day we launched the rockets. Finally, on one sunny day, we went outside with the rockets. Everyone had different sized rockets. There was small rockets, big rockets and funny shaped rockets. At this point I couldn't wait to see how high they all went! The first person to launch a rocket was Ella. As all the rest of room 2 sat on the ground waiting and watching for an explosion to happen, Ella was slowly pushing air into the bottle when.... it went high up into the air and over the fence! All the other rockets went high too but not as high as this one! I think it was a great day to launch the rockets.

Drama
For poetry room 2 have been turning poems into drama and actions. To make a poem into drama you have to use emotions and thoughts from the poem to turn into actions and exciting voices. This is fun to do with friends and to be in groups because they are using the same poem, actions and voices. I like doing drama every week and learning more about drama. It teaches you how to be confident and how to look further into the poem and past the words.

The Flood is Back!!
It happened in 2006 and now it's happening again!! In 2006 there was a flood! When you looked outside you couldn't even see the tops of the posts and the fences! Its not as bad this time but everyone is saying it is 2006 all over again!! This morning we went for a walk around our house to get some photos of the flooding. My sister and I went into the water but not too far! We didn't want to fall in! It has been a very exciting morning and even the horses came over to see the flooding!! No school today because we can't even drive down our driveway to get there. Last night there were lots of cars going up and down the valley and so were we. You could see that already in the paddocks there were puddles turning into lakes!! Everyone is ringing up people in the valley to make sure they're ok. It has been all very exciting with a flood in Whangaehu again!

Fordell school has been running, running and running and it has all paid off!! Yesterday it was the Fordell school cross country and a wonderful day to have it! The sun was shinning brightly and everyone was ready to run a race and do their best. It was a house challenge again so nearly everyone was in their house colours. The points were added up in the end but there was a race everyone was going to run! The year 1's had to do one small lap , year 2's had to do two small laps, year 3's had to do three small laps , year 4's had to do one small and one huge lap, year 5's had to do one small lap one huge lap and then one small lap again, year 6's had to do one small lap one huge lap and then two small laps, year 7's and 8's had to do one small lap and two huge laps and the pre-school had to do run around a post. At the end everyone was very tired and a lot of them got a prize!!! Soon the house results would be announced and their would be only one winner!! It was very exciting. The winner was ............... Kowhai ! Second was Tawa and third was Miro! I hope everyone had a great day.
Science Fair
It has been a long time and finally we have all finished! Over the last few weeks year 6's, 7's and 8's got the opportunity to do a science project. The ones who wanted to go up for the challenge had to choose a topic and a question and find it out. Renee and I chose a topic about cupcakes and our question which was "Does the colour of the food affect the enjoyment of the taste?" Now, this was a fun experiment to do and to do it we had to bake a type of food which was cupcakes and make them all different colours. Then we would had to test people by seeing which colour of the food was their favourite and write down their age and their name. Soon after, we were ready to start putting all the information on our science boards that we were given. Renee and I made our one colourful and painted it. Not too long after that we typed out the information and stuck it on the board. It was a great idea to put photos on the board and Renee and I did put a lot of photos on our board. Our science boards got put into WIS to be judged. It was exciting waiting to see the scores of our boards. All the children who did a science board went to WIS to see all the other boards to get ideas for next year. I really enjoyed the trip and seeing all the different boards and science. Today Mr. Walker got an email from WIS to tell us the scores. All of our boards got a good score and I am very proud of Renees and mine because we worked really hard on it and it did turn out amazing! So did everyone elses so they should be proud of themselves as well!

Flying Frogs
There are a lot of frogs in the world so many that it's hard to choose what's your favourite! This is one of the most incredible frogs in the world! The flying frog! Here are three things you are going to learn about flying frogs.
Firstly, how they fly. These amazing animals can't fly but they can glide. Flying frogs normally glide from tree to tree or log to log. They use their webbed hands and feet for control as they glide through the air.
Wouldn't it be nice to know where these froggy friends are found? Well, it's time to know. You would find them in lowland forest in the middle of agricultural land crisscrossed by farmers and buffalo lands. You could also find them in ponds in forests with a lot of slimy logs.
Lastly, what types are there of flying frogs. These frogs are just called flying frogs ,nothing too interesting. You would be very lucky if you did find a flying frog because there are not a lot of them in the world.
It is very hard to choose your favourite frog but as you see this is the most interesting frog of all, the flying frog.

The Amazing House Challenge!!!!!!
Friday was the day when Fordell school had the most important house challenge! For this interesting house challenge the whole house was involved working all day, at school! Painting, drawing, gluing and decorating the three huge shields. These are the shields which each house were to decorate and make it the best it could be. Kowhai, Tawa and Miro spent all day at school doing this and at break and lunch the rooms the shields were in were out of bounds. This was an amazing day and for all our hard work only one house could win! As everyone settled down in the tin shed there was a lot of whispering going on. The Assembly was the same as the other assemblies but at the end it was time to announce the winner of the amazing house challenge. Everyone was at the edge of their seats waiting, wanting their house name on the Fordell school shield but there can only be one winner. It is... out of Kowhai, Tawa and Miro ........ it is....................... One of the best houses, KOWHAI!!!!!!!!!!WOW! What an amazing day the school had and to finished off the house, Kowhai, is the winner of the house challenge. I think all the houses could have won that one at the sight of the three shields so Well Done to everyone!!!!!

Interesting fact for the week!!!
A lot of materials are very strong but the strongest material of all must be Duck tape! Did you know that if you are on an island with only duck tape you will survive! You can make shelter, hammocks, chest (board game), traps ( for food), fire (for warmth), a water bottle and a boat with paddles, all with duck tape! So you can be on an island, survive and escape. Did you know that will you need a lot of duck tape and I mean a lot!

The Most Interesting Fact!
Now, there are very huge things in the world that you might want to know about but extremely small things are even more interesting! The smallest flying robot insect in the world is to go into space! Professor Robert J Wood explains:
"This is what I have been trying to do for literally the last 12 years. Now that we've got this unique platform, there are dozens of tests that we're starting to do, including more aggressive control maneuvers and landing." WOW!!! Did you know that! Well now you do!!

Museum Trip
Today Room 2 got into car groups and zoomed off to the museum. At this trip we all learnt about flight and birds. It was very interesting and fun learning how the movement of the birds feathers help them fly, turn and glide in the air. The skeletons of the birds were amazing to look at. Room2 got to feel a lot of different feathers and look at them as well. Soon we all had to do an activity sheet on the birds, bones and feathers. On the sheet there were also a lot of things we had to draw like: wings and feathers. All the birds we looked at were the ones that weren't in the museum on display. I thought the trip was very exciting and
Hiroshima Day
Hiroshima Day is on the 6th of August 1945. This is the day when the first atomic bomb was dropped. Two Americans flew a plane from America to Japan, carrying a deadly bomb. In World War Two, many bombs were making a boom but when the atomic bomb was let off it was the biggest noise you would have ever heard and the brightest flash you would have ever seen. As soon as it was dropped 100's of 1000's were killed in a click of the finger. I didn't think this was very successful as others say. But it did kill so many people in Japan and end the war. So what do you think? Successful or not?

House Challenge
We had the school house challenge last term and the performances were all very exciting to watch! Our school has had many challenges but this one was BIG. You needed to put hard work into the song that you were singing with your house. We had three weeks to practice and to choose our song and actions.
Fordell school's houses are: Tawa, Kowhai and Miro. Each house did a great song and performed very well. It was the house, Tawa who won this house challenge! Congratulations Tawa!

ASB Man's trip to Fordell
Last week, an A.S.B man from Wellington came to Fordell to teach and tell us about banking and the best way to save money. He made us all laugh with funny statements! His name was Vanny and he was in a band call Strawberry Jam and Vanny played the air guitar in his band. Vanny also told us about the jobs that we can do now at this age. Together we worked on a "get what you want plan," to save up our expenses so we could get more money to bye a real guitar and then Vanny would be able to stay in his band. This ASB man made the day fun and exciting! I hope he saves enough money to get his guitar.

The Sound Of Autumn
Along the cold, slimy grass I hear the swooshing of my bare feet sliding.
"Chirp tweet, " the birds are cheerful under the wind blown tree.
Running across the playground the fallen leaves crinkling and crumbling like pieces of paper.
On the uneven, grey path I can hear the " boom snap eek" of the preschool children playing.
I feel the pointy conkers crunching as I skip through the playground.
I see the squishy dew resting on top of the soggy green grass.
I like seeing, hearing and feeling Autumn.

In Flanders Field
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders field.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae
